The Black gnat is a traditional pattern dating back to the  18th or 19th century in British fly fishing. Its originator is not specifically known .

Earlier authors such as Richard Bowler – The Art of Angling – mid 1700’s and Alfred Ronalds – The Fly Fishers Entomology 1836 details the Black Gnat and the connection of artificial materials to the real insect.
